Genesis 19:30-33 - Throwing it all away

Scripture:

Genesis 19:30-33
30 Lot went up from Zoar, and stayed in the mountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to stay in Zoar; and he stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters.
31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of the earth.
32 "Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him that we may preserve our family through our father."
33 So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
NASU

Thoughts:

Lot's foolish decision to unite himself with Sodom (Genesis 14:11-12) has now cost him everything:

  1. His home and possessions were destroyed with the city

    Genesis 19:24-25
24 Then the Lord  rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven, 25 and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
    NASU

  2. His wife perished

    Genesis 19:26
26 But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
    NASU

  3. His children became as the immoral of Sodom as they committed this sinful act  (verses 31-32)
  4. His dignity (verses 30 and 33)
  5. And now, through the heinous sin of his daughters, he has birthed 2 of Israel's enemy nations:

    Genesis 19:37-38
37 The firstborn bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 As for the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the sons of Ammon to this day.
    NASU

I imagine Lot thought he could live in Sodom with no repercussions.  Like we are also tempted, he may have thought a little compromise would harm no one.  We are told that he knew it was a sinful place he lived in, yet he stayed for reasons we do not know:

2 Peter 2:7-8
7 and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds)
NASU

But instead of harming no one, it cost him and the ones he loved everything.  Oh the hidden and often times lurking cost of sin.  We must not be deceived, there is always a cost to be paid for willful sin in our lives.

Prayer:

Lord, reveal any sin I'm permitting in my life, that I might turn from it with Your strength.  I don't want evil things in my life, and I don't want to harm the ones I love (or anyone else).

Amen
