3 John 5-8 - Supporting missionaries
Scripture:
3 John 5-8
5 Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the
brethren, and especially when they are strangers;
6 and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do
well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God.
7 For they went out for the sake of the Name, accepting nothing from
the Gentiles.
8 Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow
workers with the truth.
NASU
Thoughts:
In John's letter to Gaius
3 John 1
1 The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
NASU
we learn that Gaius knew the joy of supporting missionaries (verses 6
and 7). The same model in these verses continues today, of churches
and church
people supporting missionaries, so that they are not a burden upon
those to whom they are called to minister, in this case, "the Gentiles."
This act of involvement and generosity is such a blessing to us.
Through our gifts and prayers we are blessed to participate in the work
that God is doing (verse 8) perhaps far away from where we live to
people whom we will never meet before we stand in Glory. We cannot all
travel to the ends of the world or stand on an inner city street corner
with a handful of tracts, but we can all do something. The greatest
single thing any and all of us can do, is to pray.
Prayer:
Thank You for allowing me to be used in this way. How wonderful it
will be to meet those touched by missionaries I've helped in one way or
another in this life. To meet those whom I've had a part in
their salvation or growth in Christ, though on Earth we never knew each
other.
Amen
