Amos 8:11-12 - Famine of God's word

Scripture:

Amos 8:11-12
11 "Behold, days are coming," declares the Lord God,
"When I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine for bread or a thirst for water,
But rather for hearing the words of the Lord.
12 "People will stagger from sea to sea
And from the north even to the east;
They will go to and fro to seek the word of the Lord,
But they will not find it.

Thoughts:

Verse 11 is a famous Old Testament quote. It expounds on our need for the words within the Bible. Imagine a time that His word had disappeared like crops during a famine? This time would come when God would be silent towards His people Israel because of their sin. He would give them a time without prophets to hear from Him.

But what about us today? Perhaps like me, you sometimes find it difficult to get into God's word. The pressures and demands of a busy life can begin to edge God out. So much so that although we live in a time where His word is abundantly available, we find ourselves in a time of self-imposed famine.

But God's truth is what we need most. Accomplishing another task on a to-do list, does not bring lasting peace. Only time with our Savior can do that. And what better way to fellowship with Him, than in His word.

Prayer:

Thank You for carving out this time for me now, to read Your word. Thank You for how You bless and recharge me from the pages of scripture. You are wonderful!

Amen
