Luke 12:15-21 - Eternal investing

Scripture:

Luke 12:15-21
15 Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions."
16 And He told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man was very productive.
17 "And he began reasoning to himself, saying, "What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?'
18 "Then he said, "This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19 "And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."'
20 "But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?'
21 "So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Thoughts:

Jesus warns us of the snare of greed and of putting our confidence in our possessions (verse 15).  What may start as a wise course of action to plan ahead for leaner times which the Bible commends, can slide into greed and a false sense of security.

Jesus tells us that even for the wealthy, their life is not defined by what they have.  He points out the foolishness of being prepared for the rest of our lives on Earth (if we truly can be), but not growing in our relationship with God (verse 21).  Neglecting eternal things for those that are passing away.  None of us knows when our last minute in this life will be.  As it was for the rich man in this parable, it may be before we're able to enjoy any of the things that we've so carefully set aside (verse 20).

Rather, we should be making every effort to be rich in the things of God.  Deepening our knowledge of Him and relationship with Him, and responding to His leading in ministering to others.  These things will last after this life.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to be a wise investor.  For all I know, changes in the world and economy could render even the greatest amount of savings worthless, then where would my security be?

Let me remember that You are my Provider.  Though nothing in this world is certain, You never change.  You have promised to care for me and all those who love You, and You always keep Your word.

And help me to not be consumed by what I own, but consumed with following You.  May I grow deeper in my knowledge of You, today.  And may I be a blessing to those You bring into my life.

Amen
