Ecclesiastes 7:10 - Looking forward, not back
Scripture:
Ecclesiastes 7:10
10 Do not say, "Why is it that the former days were better than these?"
For it is not from wisdom that you ask about this.
NASU
Thoughts:
Solomon points out another fruitless exercise, looking to the past,
longingly. This is such a deceptive temptation. Some level of
reflection is good, of course. Recalling God's past goodness to us is
certainly biblical, as the feasts of the ancient Jews were intended to
do (for example, the Passover). But, it so easily degrades into
discontentment with today and a desire for yesterdays that can never
return. This is not the way of Christ. We must always live in the now
as Paul exhorted:
Philippians 3:13-14
13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but
one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to
what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the
upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
NASU
Rather than living life looking backward, we are to look forward with
hope.
Prayer:
Thank You for my life. I do miss past times, but thank You that what I
have now is also a blessing if for no other reason, because You are
here with me.
Protect me from day-dreaming of days gone by. Instead, let me be full
of faith today, as You take me where You want me to go.
Amen
