Mark 2:27-28 - Keeping Christ our focus
Scripture:
Mark 2:27-28
27 Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for
the Sabbath.
28 "So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
NASU
Thoughts:
To verse 28, we might rephrase it this way, "the Law-giver is greater
than the Law."
For certain, the One who gave the Law would understand it far better
than those who received it. Humanly, we see this in the difficulty we
sometimes have conveying our ideas to others. Who can explain the
meaning of a written work better than its author?
The Pharisees had gotten wrapped up in their own understandings of the
Law. Therefore, they didn't understand that God made the Sabbath as a
day for man to rest, not as a burden for him to carry:
Mark 2:23-24
23 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the
Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking
the heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, why
are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"
NASU
In their zeal for God's Law, they had lost the heart of its Author.
It is possible to become distracted by the things of the faith,
away from the Source of our faith, like the Pharisees had. Worship,
fellowship, church
leadership, even the study
of the Bible itself can draw us away from a deep and abiding
relationship with the Lord, if they become activities done for their
sake alone, and not as an expression of our relationship with Him.
Strangely, we can become focused on the particulars
of our spiritual interests, to the detriment of
our walk with God.
Prayer:
Oh God, I don't want anything to distract me from You, even church
things. If I've already wandered, help me to recover the simple daily
walk of faith with You that Christianity is all about. If I am on that
path, keep me there by Your mighty hand!
Amen
