Mark 4:37-41 - Calmer of the storm
Scripture:
Mark 4:37-41
37 And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking
over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up.
38 Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke
Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"
39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be
still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
40 And He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Do you still have no
faith?"
41 They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is
this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"

Thoughts:
This is the familiar story of the disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee
with Jesus. I love that in these verses we catch a glimpse of the
wonder of Who the Lord is (verse 41). The disciples are flabbergasted!
And who wouldn't be? Theologically, we know that Jesus, along with the
Father and Spirit, created everything and is all powerful, yet in our
day-to-day thinking, we often store this aside. We believe that He did
the "big stuff," but is not Lord over our current problems.
But in fact, He is unchanging. Just as He hushed the disciples'
nightmare, He can ours. Sometimes He may seem to be asleep in the
stern when we need Him, but He isn't. His timing is always perfect,
just as it was in this account. He could have stopped the storm
earlier, but it's doubtful whether the disciples would have grown as
they did here both in knowledge and faith, though admittedly the growth
seems slow!
Prayer:
Lord, help me to believe that You are all powerful. That You are
interested in working in my life, though I must wait for Your timing.
Grow my understanding and faith, as You did that of the disciples.
Amen
