Genesis 27:5-10 - Eroded marital love
Scripture:
Genesis 27:5-10
5 Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau.
So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring
home,
6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Behold, I heard your
father speak to your brother Esau, saying,
7 'Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me,
that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the Lord
before my death.'
8 "Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you.
9 "Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats
from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for
your father, such as he loves.
10 "Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may
eat, so that he may bless you before his death."
NASU
Thoughts:
Who would have believed that Isaac and Rebekah's
relationship would deteriorate to this? They each favor a
different son, and so Rebekah devises a scheme to trick
the debilitated Isaac into blessing her favorite, Jacob.
Ironically, she is correct in whom should be blessed
according to the Lord's prophecy however, rather than
imploring Isaac to obey God, she decides to deceive him.
Genesis 25:23
23 The Lord said to her,
"Two nations are in your womb;
And two peoples will be separated from your body;
And one people shall be stronger than the other;
And the older shall serve the younger."
NASU
Like happens to many, their marriage seems to have
degraded from a strong bond down to two people simply
living together with little love expressed. This scene
gives every indication that they have moved from the
selfless love of each other, to the selfish love of
themselves. Each wanting their own way with a hardness in
their hearts toward one another. It is an attack our
enemy brings upon the married. If God has blessed you
with a marriage partner, be on guard. Don't allow
distance to grow between you and God's partner for you,
lest you follow in the footsteps of Isaac and Rebekah.
Prayer:
Protect my marriage, Lord. Help me to put my spouse
before myself, and to not allow selfishness and bitterness
to creep in. Keep us strong in You and in our love for
each other.
Amen
